Automated vehicles promise to bring enhanced safety and more comfort to our roads. On the way towards full autonomy, sharing roads between automated vehicles and human actors is unavoidable. Moreover, even if all vehicles on the road were automated, pedestrians would still be crossing the streets. We propose a “social robot policemen” as moderators between automated vehicles (via digital communications) and vulnerable road users (via natural communications). To this end, three enablers must be integrated:

  1. theoretical methods for the formal specification of driving manoeuvres, allowing the robot to understand traffic situations and react appropriately
  2. vehicular communications allowing connected vehicles and the robot to share their intentions
  3. social human-robot interaction allowing the robot to effectively communicate with pedestrians.

This pilot will provide a first integration of the three enablers envisioning a humanoid social robot advising pedestrians in scenarios with an automated vehicle.
